Outline Newton on His Sanctity’s signal service

Outline Newton on His Sanctity’s signal service World Youth Day is a celebrating event that Pope John Paul II initiated in 1985, every edition of which has been held in a different country; after repeated rescheduling due to Covid pandemic, 2023’s finally happened last August in Lisbon, Portugal, before a 1.5 million pilgrim audience. Ensuring live audio coverage to a gathering of such magnitude isn’t a small technical achievement, in terms of event technology, over an area of 3-by-1 kilometers: pilgrims prayed and sang and danced at the sound of 109 PA towers hosting a total of 1.100 loudspeaker systems driven by 327 amplifiers, whose signal reached through 103 km of optical fiber, across 300 network switches. In order to safeguard the signal being matrixed and transported to this plethora of audio systems, two Outline Newton FPGA-based signal processors had been specifically custom-modified by their very Italian manufacturer, in order to fit the physics of the event. Rafael Pereira was appointed with the responsibility of audio systems by Portuguese company Pixel Light Audiovisuals Lda, which served the event with rental support from companies Clair Global, Faber AV and AED Events on production level: “You can only plan and run such […]

US Metal Legends Reunite With Unique Outline + Midas Advantage One of the most eagerly-awaited returns in the world of heavy rock finally happened in December ’22 as hugely influential American metallers Pantera played their first show in over two decades at Mexico’s Hell & Heaven Metal Fest, with the band’s new lineup featuring original members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown plus new alumni Charlie Benante and Zakk Wylde. Since then the band has continued to tour across North America in addition to a number of spring dates and festivals in Europe plus a number of shows opening for Metallica, to great acclaim from their very loyal and international fanbase. System Engineer Alex Hollinger has been using an Outline Newton FPGA processor at the heart of his control setup – he talks about how it is configured and also how its combination with the latest digital mixing console from Midas, the HD-96, offers a technical advantage that is presently unique in the world of live sound: “We are feeding the Newton with AES as well as MADI Co-Ax from the console for redundancy, in addition to analog feeds from the monitor console for an added layer of backup. We are […]

Outline Chosen For Superior Audio Quality In Singapore

Outline Chosen For Superior Audio Quality In Singapore A modern worship location which demands perfect intelligibility throughout a large and unusually-shaped space to deliver the Word, music and all elements of praise – the results of a blind listening test lead to the installation of an Outline system at Wesley Methodist Church. Wesley Methodist Church is the oldest Methodist church in Singapore, with its roots going back to 1885. To provide increased capacity for its ever-expanding ministry, the church has undertaken regular development programmes over many years, which have included improving the sanctuary, adding a four-storey educational block with a concert hall and basement car park, a new baptismal hall with basement rooms and Wesley Plaza. Completed in 2012, another project created a further 36,000 square feet of usable space, including a new plaza hall on top of the sanctuary extension, additional seating and the construction of another chapel in the basement. Most recently and in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic, further works were undertaken to address the limitations of the L-shaped main space and its relatively low ceilings, while adding the facilities to create, capture and stream live content from the church. In 2022, the church committee […]

What professional audio people are saying

“Using one dedicated Newton to replace what was previously several devices networked together has been so much easier to adapt to different scenarios. Day to day, we may require multiple additional feeds for house delays, VIP boxes or hearing loops, or additional fills may be needed. A nice clear matrix grid easily shows what input signal is routed to each output in one view.” “With us taking MADI, AES, and analogue out of the console on Snow Patrol, each processed input path can have 4 fall over inputs should it lose clock source on one of them. By taking several desk outputs, we had redundancy in the event of an output of the desk going down, or a cable failure.” “The support from the guys at Outline has been brilliant. The team have listened to product requests and developed the software to cater for real world use, providing help whenever needed.”

“Dave and I were hugely impressed with the Outline PA. It had been brilliantly rigged by the system engineer and his team, who helped us adapt it, subtly, for the show. It was superb, and made Lucca one of the most satisfying shows I’ve mixed to date.”

“La resa dell’audio [Outline] è stata impressionante, un suono potente come non mai, ma anche chiaro e pulito. Ad ogni edizione impariamo qualcosa ed aggiustiamo il tiro ed è bello rendersi conto che tutti gli accorgimenti si traducono in un risultato che sorprende ogni volta. Su Won’t Get Fooled Again in certi momenti sembrava esplodere una bomba nucleare, a ripensarci ancora mi esalto!” Photo by Camilla Messini

“I genuinely love this PA. It is very natural sounding, seemed to behave evenly across the whole frequency spectrum, and had plenty of headroom for our show. I never felt like I was fighting it, and it never got in the way. I felt that it translated the emotion of the music perfectly, and it was really nice to hear all the mistakes in my mix through such a revealing box! I am not very technical, and that’s why I had the amazing system tech Ville with me, so I probably couldn’t comment too much about stuff like rigging, software differences, etc. What I can comment on is the musicality of the PA. I really felt like I was mixing music…not mixing a PA system! There are only a couple of other PA systems that I feel the same way about. I find that some of the ‘big names’ sound too processed, and impart too much negative character to the sound. This PA is definitely in my top three or four now.”

“The Outline system gained a fan as soon as I opened the PA up. I didn’t have to do much at all to get what I needed out of the system, which translated the core sound of the instruments/vocals on stage clearly. Also, considering I had a 95dB limit and Janelle’s shows can get pretty loud, I had a lot of headroom.”

“The Australian Pink Floyd Show has some critical needs – it needs a scalable system, the flown system has to be lightweight and the truck footprint needs to be as small as possible. The Superfly / Mantas system ticks all three boxes. A system comprising six GTO-SUBs, 32 Superfly, 18 Mantas and 6 lip fills plus amps and trunks all fits into a 12 foot space on the truck. Also, the light weight of the boxes allows us to get eight Superfly and three Mantas on a single 500 kg point, enabling us to get maximum coverage within the weight limitations. Whether flying 11 or 17 boxes it’s incredibly quick and simple – the longest part of flying the box is hooking up the CA-COM connectors. The Superfly / Mantas combo dealt with the challenges of Aussie Floyd incredibly well, especially with a Newton processor and 12 X8’s on the front end. Integration between the two devices worked fantastically well over Capital / Solotech’s Dante digital MTP infrastructure.”

“The overall cohesiveness of the [Grand Touring Outline] system across the spectrum was very impressive even at the extreme distance to the crowd – it gave me the impression that there was a single full spectrum point source at the right and left towers. There was no sense of ever struggling with the cracks between awkward crossover points or between the different transducers in the individual loudspeakers.”

“The most important features for us when deciding upon the Newton were its small form factor with such a high I/O count, the wide scope for redundancy with dual PSUs, multiple layers of redundancy on the inputs, its unique approach to switching if an input is lost and the fact that it can SRC the wide range of digital formats it takes in. On both MTV and the Brits the Newtons were used as the front-end matrix for the audio system, taking inputs from both the presenter and band consoles in multiple formats to give us true redundancy, so MADI, Dante, AES and analogue were all used simultaneously. With the complex system design and show layout, being able to take in large groups of inputs in multiple formats was a winner – the Newton has managed to replace multiple units which used to have to be cascaded, it has eliminated clocking headaches and also means we can have an overview of everything that’s going on, all within one page of the software. The Newton having proved itself on two large scale, international televised events has shown that with its flexibility it could be used on a wide variety of our projects and it will be my go-to choice for these events moving forward.”

“Following several demos of the Newton we were very impressed with the GUI, fast workflow and ease of use. The Newton is the all-in-one solution to many technical problems. The form factor is the real selling point, it’s a constant battle for all manufacturers to try and shrink the footprint while retaining functionality – Outline have managed to find a perfect match between both. Fernando at Outline and James at CUK have been very receptive to our feedback and feature requests, which really inspires confidence in both companies. We see the Newton being used for all future projects that require simple and effective system management – any tool that speeds up workflow and simplifies complex clocking arrangements is a winner!”

“Nick Boulton and I have found Superfly to be an exceptionally good sounding and flexible cabinet. It has a very flat, consistent response which reacts very well to EQ and copes easily with a wide dynamic range of programme material. The low box weight and fly-ware also means we can hang a sufficiently high number of cabinets from the smallest to the largest of venues, whether clubs, theatres or arenas. Some of the results have been truly stunning and all in all, I feel the combination of Superfly and Mantas was the perfect choice for the European leg of the current Stereophonics World Tour 2020. I look forward to using Outline products again in the future…!”

“I was very impressed with the musicality of the Superfly. In terms of tonality, it’s very smooth and hi-fi and allows you to get very even coverage with smooth transitions between hangs. Also, Outline have done a great job with the prediction software, which allowed me to verify my designs before putting them into practice. There aren’t many user-friendly 3D bits of design software out there, but they’ve managed to create one. The other key part of the system for me was the Newton processor. It’s an extremely powerful tool and my life would have been a lot harder without it!”

“I used Outline at Red Rocks and it did a fantastic job of making it up to the top of the hill. The system engineers did an excellent job of covering the Lucca Summer Festival venue.”

“Rat Sound has been searching for several years for a solution to drive our festival sound systems and Outline has met the challenge with an elegant solution. With the Newton we can combine consoles and drive outputs in a multitude of popular formats, and we appreciate all the various clocking options. Our System Engineers instantly appreciated the intuitive, easy to use software control. Rat Sound has immediately begun deploying Newton’s on a multitude of festivals, and we plan on utilizing them on all our festival events in 2019 and beyond.”

“I love to use Newton because it is no trouble, we can now have the festival matrix desks plus the festival desk with videos, DI and MCs without problems, we don’t need to worry about clocking issues. Also, 16 outs with tons of processing power is amazing and last but not the least the Smaart integration is amazing. Newton is the way to go now in the digital world, in a single rack space unit we can do a lot. We use our Newtons as system management, summing desks on festivals and output control for the system, linked via Dante to feed delay towers. Also, Newtons solve the clock sync issue when combining with different digital audio sources – that’s the best thing in the world! Also the EQs are so precise and smooth with their phase response.”

“The Newton is a powerful unit which answers a long term need for festivals and touring. One unit can replace several of the ‘industry standard’ units which are a hassle to interlink. No other unit has the ease of use and flexibility in clocking, I/O and routing. I look forward to using them on more of my projects, and as the software develops, I’m sure they will only get better!”

“Outline has done an outstanding job of utilizing the Smaart API to integrate Smaart measurement data within the latest release of their Dashboard control software. This integration really highlights Outline’s commitment to providing their customers with powerful, forward-thinking professional audio tools and we are thrilled to see Newton/Dashboard added to the ever-growing list of Smaart API enabled products.”

“Newton is an extremely capable device. A single 1RU unit replaces a multitude of current industry standard devices. The clocking flexibility, simplistic routing, and plentiful IO makes Newton a dream to use. Each output has gain, delay, polarity, layers of EQ, and every filter type including both types of all pass filters! The possible uses for the device are incredible. Not only can the Newton make a whole rack of gear disappear, but sonically it is very transparent. When applying a filter, you hear the filter, nothing else. I find achieving the desired result not only easier, but also improves the overall sonic performance of the entire system.”

“We were looking for something versatile and simple to use, but no other solution had that level of versatility. Nothing has come close to what the Newton unit can do.”

“The GTO was already a winner on paper, due to the box containing superior components: four 3″ (HF), four 8″ (MF), and two 15″ (LF) all in a single enclosure. However it was only when I worked with the system for the first time in front of a 700,000-strong audience that I realized that the GTO was not only far superior on paper, but also compared with anything else I had ever worked with.”

“The internal word clock management allows the user to remain synchronous with whichever console is live, should they wish, the 18×16 matrix is going to be incredibly useful and the fact that all this is built in a 1RU space just makes it even better.”

“Right now we are using the Newton as our overall system management hub, providing all of our system EQ and control. On our own headline shows we also run the opening acts into it. It is nice not having to worry about clock synchronisation or digital noise with the Newton, and to have the flexibility to send or receive any format we need – this has been of great help through the day to day festival shows we have been doing this summer. The Newton is great – it’s been a real workhorse, and it is one unit in the rack I don’t have to worry about!”

“NEWTON easily met and exceeded all our expectations. But beyond the connectivity and convenience I was also delighted to discover just what a great-sounding unit this is. I also particularly enjoyed using the NEWTON’s zero-latency WFIR (Warped Finite Impulse Response) EQ filters…”

“What can I say… Working with Outline Systems is like bringing back the correct acoustic rules… but with really high technology on board fully in control without tricks… The best moment is always when we turn on the full rig… For me it’s like sitting on my Harley on a non-stop ride from the East Coast to the West Coast… Pure pleasure… Chapeau, Monsieur Noselli!… So what can I say… Nothing – just listen… louder!…”

“There is some monstrous power contained in one rack unit: easy to use, fast to configure for any need, no more problems with SRC or clock sync … I faced a summer tour where, for every PA I happened to work with, I had a powerful and efficient tool for my mixes. Finally a device that has the combination of pristine quality and extreme flexibility. Hope to use it as soon as possible for a festival. Italian pride. ROCK!”

“Since I used a Newton for the first time in May 2018 as a console matrix, it’s been my preferred method of getting multiple consoles into the PA system at any one time. This year at TRNSMT we stepped it up a notch and used a pair of Newtons in tandem to do all of my console matrixing and system processing. Taking LRSF from up to 4 consoles at any one point in AES3 format with an Analogue backup, and giving me all my PA sends plus record and programme matrix’s, the Newtons worked seamlessly throughout the weekend. With the latest software update including SMAART integration and the tablet mode, what was already a fantastic bit of kit, is only going to get better.”

“Being the answer for demanding install and touring applications where top quality matrixing and processing is required, we are very happy that we can now offer Outline Newton to our clients in the Benelux. Audio quality and technical specs are on the highest level which, combined with the extensive 18×16 matrix, has resulted in high profile users all over the world”

“With over 700 shows under my belt mixing Justin Moore, I’ve never come across another system that has the sonic accuracy and headroom of Outline’s GTO C-12.”

“Managing Director Keith Davis, Senior Project Manager Martin Connolly, Project Manager Robin Conway and I sat in the back row of the upper bowl and the clarity and sonic performance of the [GTO C-12] system blew us away…the highs, mids and lows were all incredible. There was not even a hint of needing delay hangs for the O2 Arena.”

“Outline has done a wonderful job making GTO C-12 sound fabulous right from the start – rich, potent, and with the silky smooth highs that Outline is known for. In a theatre setting, it was the most hi-fi experience, much like sitting at home listening to my reference system.”

“…just done our sound check for an open air show, the [Superfly] rig breezed it, it’s absolutely fantastic, full, clear, powerful, and travels a great distance; I have been working on my processing and now have the mix very smooth, it’s a great system. The show was fantastic, I can’t believe how solid the system is outside. It’s the best I have used. It’s perfect!” | Full interview (https://vimeo.com/293948997)

“It was very risky and I’d never have accepted the challenge without the Outline systems, because I know them inside out!” [ref. World Youth Day in Krakow with 2.5 Million Pilgrims]

“I try to mix the show the way I would want to hear it, nice and punchy with lots of vocals so the crowd can sing along. The GTO C-12 has easily accomplished that task. The system sounds even across the whole spectrum and didn’t seem to shift its tonal balance if it was driven lightly or given its head. Francis Rossi in particular is very in touch with the audience and they hang on his every quip, so having his vocal mic open and crystal clear is paramount. I go for big drums sounds, fat guitars, a good layer of BV’s and make sure all the guitar solos are present.”

“The sound produced by the guys on stage is rich, full and symphonic, and it is essential that I have a PA that capable of delivering this to all corners of the auditorium. The reach of this system is phenomenal – the people at the back of the balconies have been enjoying a far more full frequency spectrum than previously, particularly in the top end. The GTO C-12 system to me is voiced very forward, which makes it very suitable for arena-sized and smaller outdoor shows and this characteristic really helps it push the mix to all corners of the venue.”

”The Outline system works great, and the settings available have enabled me to easily achieve a smooth and natural response across the entire frequency range.”

“GTO is the closest thing I found in live sound to the definition of studio monitoring. It’s so detailed that you need to treat it with respect. In some ways you have to rethink your mix and be careful not to overlook anything that will show up if it’s not handled carefully.”

“There are very few powerful PA’s on the market that also sound even, tight and clean. GTO is one of them. Its quality is outstanding and like every other Outline product is versatile and easy to manage. The excellent 3D prediction software OpenArray helps to create a perfect sound design too. The R&D team does incredible job. I started using Outline since the Butterfly days and it is always a pleasure to mix using their systems.”

“As a team we bring to professional audio the same legendary Italian passion and creativity that lead the world in many other fields. We listen to our customers so that we can create the true audience experience.“
